In the world of bodywork, there are number of tools that bodyworkers use to help improve the results of our services. This is true for both human and equine clients. When I examine a horse that I’m working with, it’s important that I’m addressing their specific needs. One of the tools I use is the PEMF.
What is a PEMF?
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. A PEMF system uses small electrical pulses to affect the body at a cellular level and jumpstart the body’s own natural healing ability. While it doesn’t fix everything, it can be a great assist to a bodyworker.
What does PMF do for horses?
In my approach to bodywork, PEMF has proven to be a fantastic tool that helps with:
Nerve regeneration
Neuromuscular response
Healing soft tissue
Accelerating the healing of broken bones
Restoring healing ability by boosting the body’s natural immune response
Improving blood oxygenation
Decreasing inflammation
Why is PEMF only one part of my holistic approach to bodywork?
PEMF has its limitations, like any other tool, and in my experience, it doesn’t reach its top potential unless it is combined with other techniques, such as massages. You build muscle by working it out and creating micro-tears in the tissue. This is the same with massages. PEMF in combination with massage helps to accelerate the healing and to prevent or minimize the muscle aches associated with those tears.
What kinds of PEMF systems are on the market?
There are many PEMF systems available. The most famous is Magna Wave, but its main competitors aren’t far behind. Along with Magna Wave, you can find:
And many, many more
Does it matter which PEMF is used?
In general, all PEMF systems provide the same basic functions, with differences found in ease of use, comfort, and quality of service. You want to carefully vet your systems before you buy, ensuring you get the best one for your horse’s needs.
Always discuss treatment options for your horses with a veterinarian, equine therapist, or bodywork specialist before beginning treatment.
